Lot Essay

The inscription can be read; amal-e ostad gholam hoseyn kermani 1308 which translates as 'Work of Ustad (master) Gholam Hoseyn Kermani, 1308'. A number of particularly fine carpets have been recorded with the signature Ustad Hoseyn Kirmani, including the Throne Room carpet woven for Nasir al-Din Shah Qajar in AH 1286/1869-70 AD. There is evidence from the inscription of a carpet sold in these Rooms, 13 April 2000, that there was more than one Ustab Hoseyn working in Kirman as the inscription relates that the carpet was 'finished by the supervision of Ustad Hoseyn, the elder'. However, the elegance and finesse of the present lot are undeniable and it seems possible that the weaver of this rug was the same master Hoseyn Kermani.
