A history of the Prophet Muhammad, Persian manuscript on paper, 606ff. plus 3 fly-leaves, each folio with 25ll. of black naskh, key words picked out in red and blue, titles mostly within gold rules, text panels within gold and blue rules, four gold and polychrome floral headpieces, the opening bifolio with a fully illuminated index page with titles written diagonally in alternating pink and white muhaqqaq on illuminated panels within arabesque margins, the following bifolio with the opening of the text below a fully illuminated heading, the margins similar to the previous bifolio, the penultimate colophon dated Muharram with the date AH 946 written in numerals, in red morocco with cloth cover, some water staining, numerous seal impressions and owners' notes at the beginning and end

The Ma'arij al-nubuwwah was compiled by Mu'in al-Din binHajji Muhammad Sharaf al-Din al-Farahi al-Haravi al-Miskin in Herat on 1 Rabi' I AH 891/8 March 1486 AD. The text comprises a detailed history of the Prophet Muhammad and consists of a long introduction, four chapters (rukn) and an epilogue.

A copy of the text dated AH 1137/1724-25 AD is in the Edinburgh University Library (M. Ashraful Hukk, H. Ethe & E. Robertson, A Descriptive Catalogue of the Arabic and Persian Manuscripts in Edinburgh University Library, 1925, cat. 190). In that catalogue entry the following are given as other known copies: Rieu (B.M.P. Catalogue I, p.149 sq); Bodleian Catalogue, pp.128-130; Aumer (Munich Catalogue, p.100); Ethe (I.O. Catalogue, pp.134-44); Stewart (Descriptive Catalogue, p.22). Ours, which is dated 1539, is a very early copy of the work. Another copy, dated AH 1019/1610-11 AD and attributed to Bukhara, sold in these Rooms, 8 April 2008, lot 191.
