Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse was one of the most celebrated sculptors of the Second Empire in France, executing sculptures for many of the era’s most important patrons and buildings. During an illustrious career, Carrier-Belleuse also created works of art in porcelain both for Sèvres, for whom he served as the Directeur des travaux d’art, and for other manufactories including Mintons. The present lot, known as `large lamp-bearers’ are described and illustrated J. Hargrove, The Life and Work of Albert Carrier-Belleuse, New York, 1977, p. 279 and pl. 273.
