Lot Essay

Multimedia artist Tam Van Tram is known for his use of non-traditional materials to make his ebullient abstract paintings and drawings. In the case of Natural Born Hippie he has made use of beet juice alongside more conventional mediums of gouache and coloured pencil. This interjection of a natural material seems to be referenced in the joking title of the piece, which, in addition to its physical composition, also suggests the identity of both the work’s maker and its possible subject-matter.
