Lot Essay

Phillip Allen is a master of painterly effects, frequently juxtaposing subtle, barely-there scraped down passages with dense accretions of paint. In Classic Gambit (declined version) an arrangement of floating lozenges are anthropomorphized and seemingly in conversation, each a thin field with an impastoed dot placed atop it. In this way, while gesturing to a narrative, the work is resolutely abstract and set in a mysterious imaginary world.
