Lot Essay

Jakob Mattner's interdisciplinary practice ranges from sculptures and large-scale installations to a significant series of drawings addressing the Cold War, which he produced in the 1970s and 1980s. Each drawing incorporates a Russian term written in Cyrillic and in Nacht, Russisch Brot from 1984 we see the Russian word for “Night” shining through an elegant, obscuring layer of white gouache.
