Lot Essay

Untitled #19 by Lari Pittman juxtaposes different visual registers in an abstract surrealist configuration reminiscent of a latter-day Joan Miro. The complexity of Pittman’s elaborate composition has a hallucinatory quality whose visually gripping effect is created by the meticulously layered patterns and forms quoting various styles from Victorian silhouettes to social realist murals.
