Lot Essay

The inscription on the reverse of this dish is based on Genesis 2:18 and roughly translates as 'So that man should not live alone, I give him Eve, whom you can see is born from him as if emerging from his side, for him to be with her forever.’ For a dish attributed to Urbino and painted with the same subject including a very similar figure of Eve see Johanna Lessmann, Italianische Maiolica, Katalog der Sammlung Herzog Anton-Ulrich-Museum Braunschweig, Brunswick, 1979, p. 299, no. 390.
