Lot Essay

We are grateful to Fred Meijer, of the RKD, The Hague, for proposing the attribution on the basis of photographs, and for pointing out that the central part of the composition was added by a different, later hand, possibly to conceal a devotional image. Mr Meijer further notes that the quality of the execution corresponds to Van Kessel's late work of the 1660s.
