Civa is one of the main Hindu deities and is here depicted in the lotus position. Shayo observes that for Chiparus the figure represented the exoticism of the East and was clearly influenced by dances of the Ballets Russes. Notably, he illustrates a period photograph of the gipsy Rhouma-je holding the same pose as this sculpture (p. 32).
