Bernard M. Baruch (1870 – 1965) was an American financier and philanthropist. Known as the “Park Bench Statesman” for his propensity to discuss government affairs on a park bench, Mr. Baruch served as a political consultant under U.S. Presidents Woodrow Wilson and Franklin D. Roosevelt. Mr. Baruch and his wife, Annie Griffen Baruch, had an extensive collection of English furniture and silver, some of which was donated to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. See also lots 14, 15 and 87, which were all donated to the museum in 1965. The commode table (lot 89) had also been in the Bache collection.
