Lot Essay

This figure is inspired by a Meissen example modeled by Peter Reinicke and J.J. Kändler, circa 1744. Compare M. Chilton, Harlequin Unmasked, New Haven, 2001, p. 198, fig. 315 for the Meissen model and fig. 316 for an earlier engraving of Pantalone's costume. Also see The Cheyne Book of Chelsea China and Pottery, London, 1924, no. 341, which incorrectly identifies the model as Shylock.
