Lot Essay

The pattern arm features on chairs at Drayton House (1701-2), while the stretchers and legs conform to those at Burley-on-the-Hill (1702). Both sets were obviously highly prized as they were supplied for the State Bedrooms (see A. Bowett, English Furniture 1660-1714, 2002, pp. 238-239, pl. 8:17-8:18). The crest rail also features on a chair at Treasurer's House, York of the same date (op. cit., pl. 8:58).
