Heirs Jorge Castro, Malvasia 1879
Recorked, rewaxed and topped up in 2015. Stencilled bottles. Levels into neck
Tasting note: Bottled 1943, recorked/rewaxed 2015.
The 1879 Malvasia wine was from the inheritance of Joao Martins da Silva (1860-1940), a ship owner and founder of the Madeira Navigation Agency, and belonged to army captain Manuel de Faria. Mr de Faria was the grandfather of the current owner and the last producer of Madeira wine in a long line of relatives dating back to the early settlement of the island. Bottled in 1943.
Clear orange colour. Soft intense scented nose of sun dried grapes and honeycake. Attack of taste, spirity in old Cognac style, followed by round medium sweet mid pallet. Intense with leather, seasoned wood and secondary aromas. Beautiful developed Madeira. First tasted in January 2013. Remarkable well preserved for this age. Brought to MWC by current owner for tasting.
In December 2013 from a sample bottle sent to London for valuation; Fragrant, sweet nose, raisins, leather and honeycake. Refined Napoléon Cognac nose. Concentrated plum aroma, beautiful nose, lively and fresh. At first a slight 'Velpon (glue) tone', later giving way to a sweet taste of dried fruits, plums and currants. In final slight bitters, Cognac and medium sweet dried fruits. Very good.
Apr 15 at The Majesty of Malvasia tasting in NY. Double decanted and closed with new cork and wax by owner in Feb 2015. Brought on the plane to DelPosto. Sweet concentrated nose of caramel, orange-peel, leathery and floral tones. Intense and well balanced. Touch of Cognac. Honey cake. Smokey aromas. Intensely sweet attack, classic Malvasia, plums passion fruit ending with fresh crème brulée aromas. Soft aftertaste. Delicate wine. EV.
