Lot Essay

The title of the present lot, 'Umbhaco', is the Xhosa name for a traditional skirt worn by women of the community during ritual celebrations. The skirts, made from leather decorated with beads and repeating motifs, create beautiful patterns during dance movement. The vase was inspired by this movement with the designer emulating the patterns and rhythm he found while listening to their soundtrack of praise and song as he worked on this piece.
