From around 1919 until Rietveld’s death in 1964, Gerard van de Groenekan served as the architect’s dedicated cabinetmaker, assisting with the actualisation of his furniture designs. During the 1960s the cabinetmaker executed examples of Rietveld’s designs for his family’s personal use, including the present lot. Other works from the cabinetmaker’s estate were sold in these rooms, 20th Century Decorative Art & Design, 30 October 2013.
Originally created for the Steltman jewellery store, The Hague, 1963-1965, this form endures as one of Rietveld’s most graphic and architectural conceptions for furniture design.
