They are made for a fourth rank official and embroidered in counted stitch technique in coloured silks and gold and silver thread, depicting a yellow goose standing on a rock emerging from waves, flanked by flowers and tall rocks, within a ruyi head border.
8 ½ x 9 in. (21.5 x 23 cm.), framed and glazed
Provenance
Acquired in China by Augustine Heard, who established a trading house in Shanghai in 1860 or Max von Brant who was German Minister Plenipotentiary to China (1875-1893).
Inherited by the late Mrs Horace Gray, and was purchased by the vendor in the 1970s.
