Lot Essay

The current meiping is notable for its particularly slender form and rich monochrome glaze. Brown-glazed meipings dating to the Jin dynasty are more commonly seen with carved floral decoration. The technique used to decorate these type of vases, which involved fully glazing the vessel and then cutting away or incising the design through the glaze before firing, was employed at several kilns producing Cizhou-style ceramics in Henan and Shanxi provinces. It is interesting to note that the current vase was glazed but not decorated, which serves to highlight its elegant silhouette.

Compare the current vase to a carved Jin example with similar tone of brown glaze, sold at Christie's New York, 20 & 21 March 2014, lot 2087.
