A LONGQUAN CELADON DRUM-SHAPED JAR WITH SPRIG-MOULDED DECORATION
SONG-YUAN DYNASTY (960-1368)
The jar is decorated to the gently rounded sides with a relief moulded band of meandering peonies, linked by leafy stems formed of trailed slip, all between two rows of bosses. It is covered overall in a glaze of sea-green tone pooling within the crevices and thinning at the raised areas. The mouth and foot rim are left unglazed and burnt orange in the firing.

Compare the current jar to a slightly larger one, also dating to the Song-Yuan dynasty, but with additional twin-handle decoration, sold at Christie's Hong Kong, 30 May 2006, lot 1331.
