2 volumes, 4° (318 x 249mm). 85 lithographic plates, comprising 18 plates of mammals after B. Waterhouse Hawkins (16 hand-coloured); 16 ornithological plates after JOHN GOULD (11) and B. Waterhouse Hawkins (5) (all hand-coloured); 30 ichthyological plates after W. Mitchell (all uncoloured); and 21 mollusca plates after G.B. Sowerby (all hand-coloured). (Plates 26, 28 & 33 of Birds detached, first plate of mollusca with small stains in outer margin, a few plates in first volume with small unobtrusive punch holes in outer margin.) Contemporary green blindstamped cloth (rebacked and recornered).
FIRST EDITION OF IMPORTANT STUDIES FROM BELCHER'S VOYAGE ABOARD THE SULPHUR. Appointed to the Sulphur in November 1836, Belcher and his crew surveyed the west coasts of both North and South America before being called back to England via the western route in 1839. After arriving in Singapore in 1840, Belcher was called back to China because of the war, and the Sulphur became actively engaged the following year in operations on the Canton River. Belcher and his crew finally returned to England in 1842, almost seven years after beginning their expedition. The Zoology, authored by J.E. Gray, John Gould, and J.
