Valentinus, title printed in red and black with engraved vignette, engraved portrait on verso and 34 large engraved illustrations, woodcut illustrations, initials and head- and tailpieces, letterpress tables and music. (Without final blank, waterstaining at bottom corner, occasional soiling and browning.) 20th-century brown half morocco by Wigmore, blue top edge and others speckled (light rubbing). Provenance: Sir Thomas Mauleverer, 1st baronet (bap. 1599-d. 1655, politician; ownership inscription on title and marginal annotations).
Third edition, ‘the finest and most complete of the three editions ... greatly enlarged by Kircher it contains many observations and experiments not in the two previous editions [of 1641 and 1643]; however, the subjects treated remain the same’ (Merrill). Caillet calls it 'un des remarquables ouvrages de Kircher' and notes that 'Le chapitre qui traite du magnétisme musicale est remarquable'.
