LISTER, Martin (1638?-1712). Historiae sive Synopsis Methodicae Conchyliorum et Tabularum Anatomicarum editio altera. Oxford: Clarendon, 1770.
2 parts in one volume, 2° (370 x 235mm). 1084 engravings of which 9 folding, 6pp. of ‘Notes and Observations’ bound at end (numbered 1-1059 plus 22 plates; without figures 89, 164, 195, 196, 222, 923 & 961, but with 10 bis figures: 101a, 101b, 168a, 512+, 822b, 846b, 883, 931, 965b, 990b). (Some occasional light browning and spotting, few plates slightly shaved.) 19th-century half sheep (boards detached, corners, extremities and spine chipped).
Second edition of Lister's best known work with over a thousand detailed illustrations of molluscs drawn by his wife and daughter. The work was first published in London in 1685-1692 with the title Historiae conchyliorum liber primus [-quartus]. Originally issued in parts, it seems few copies are identical and many vary in the number of engravings. Its original publication led to Lister's position as the founder of conchology. Nissen ZBI 2529 (with 1082 engravings only).
