SPECTACULAR GEOLOGICAL SECTIONS BY WILLIAM SMITH. After Smith’s single-handed publication of his pioneering large-scale national geological map in 1815, he continued to issue geological sections to supplement this work. These amply demonstrate Smith's understanding of stratigraphy, his major contribution to the science of geology. ‘The sections were sold at five shillings each, and Cary also lists them as available in a quarto volume, bound with the London to Snowdon section (No. 18 above) and the “Table of Organized Fossils” (No. 16 B above); two sheets of mining sections in Cornwall, by Richard Thomas, dated 1 July 1819, are also usually included in this volume’ (Eyles, 26). This lot is the 4° volume which Eyles references, although in this copy, the Table of Organized Fossils – explicitly referred to in the London to Snowdon section – is not present, and only one of Richard Thomas' sections is present. EXTREMELY RARE: IN THE PAST 50 YEARS, ONLY TWO COPIES OF THE LONDON-SNOWDON SECTION HAVE SOLD AT AUCTION (Dominic Winter 9 November 2011, lot 310; Sotheby’s 23 January 1967, lot 194), AND ONLY ONE CAN BE TRACED IN THE BOOK TRADE (Maggs cat. 1342, item 42). Challinor 87 and p.96; J.M. Eyles ‘William Smith ... A Bibliography’ in J. Soc. Bib. Nat. Hist. (1969) 5 (2), nos 18 and 26; J. Fuller, ‘Strata Smith and his stratigraphic cross sections: 1819’ in AAPG Bulletin (1995).
