Lot Essay

Richard de la Mare (1901-1986), the son of poet Walter de la Mare and T.S. Eliot’s publisher, bought Much Hadham Hall in 1936 and built up a collection of English furniture and oriental porcelain (see lots 13, 65 & 85). His collection was sold by Sotheby’s on 30 September-1 October 1980. Much Hadham Hall, Hertfordshire was built from 1726-9 for the Rev William Stanley, probably by John James of Greenwich. These tables were originally in the staircase hall at Much Hadham.
