Martha Baird Rockefeller (1895-1971) the second wife of John D. Rockefeller Jr, was a world-class classical pianist in the 1920s before marrying John D. Rockefeller Jr in 1951. Together they engaged Mott B. Schmidt to design Hillcrest, a neo-classical mansion on the Rockefeller family estate, Kykuit in New York, where they created the ideal of American eighteenth-century taste.
