Lot Essay

With its pierced column stem terminating in scrolled feet, the form of the present tripod base relates to a design for a card table in Mayhew and Ince's Universal System of Household Furniture, 1759-1763, pl. LIII. Further designs for claw tables, kettle stands and fire screens with pierced or `open' tripod stands also featured prominently and as such, the pattern seems to have been characteristic of their oeuvre.
