This cellaret illustrates the Regency preference for the use of fine woods and natural veneers over the marquetry, gilt-metal mounts contrasting superbly with the mahogany figuring. Of sarcophagus form derived from antiquity as featured in Piranesi’s Vasi, candelabra, cippi, sarcofagi… (1778-80) a related design is illustrated in George Smith’s The Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer’s Guide (1826-27), plate CVII. A similar example with richly carved paw feet but without the elaborately carved lid was at Clandon Park, Surrey (NT 1440841.2).
