Lot Essay
A related whatnot or music stand by Gillows, made to a design in the Estimate Sketch Book for 1849, is illustrated in Susan Stuart, Gillows of Lancaster and London 1730-1840, Woodbridge, 2008, vol.II, p.110, pl.658. Stuart notes that a high music stand with `elevating top' was illustrated in the Estimate Sketch Book as early as 1823 and a very similar, though larger, piece was described as a 'bookstand' in 1834. The tight beading, double-tapered spindles and boldly reeded feet of the present lot would suggest a date of manufacture in the 1820s.
