CRICK, Francis (1916-2004). Typed letter signed ('Francis') to Larry Bachmann, Salk Institute for Biological Sciences, San Diego, 11 June 1998.
'THERE'S ALMOST NO SEX OR VIOLENCE IN THE STORY': Crick doubts 'that one can make a commercial film about the Double Helix', despite the fact that 'by now almost everyone has heard of DNA, even if they're rather vague about the details'. Continuing 'I doubt if there is nowadays the same type of audience as there was for "Madame Curie" and like movies ... I think your only hope is to make it as a comedy – but who am I to give advice to you', Crick also sheds doubt, rather amusing with hindsight, as to the suitability of a manuscript of his for the collection of Roy Davids – 'I doubt if he's the right person for me' – as well as sharing details of his life in San Diego. One page, 4to (278 x 215mm). Provenance: Roy Davids Collection.
Lawrence P. Bachmann (1911-2004) was a screenwriter and studio executive who started as an assistant film-cutter at the age of 16 and later rose to become head of Paramount and then MGM. This proposed film, never to be made, on the discovery of DNA seems to have been a cherished project of Bachmann's: he had been writing to Crick about it for at least 5 years.
