Details
ERASMUS, Desiderius (1466-1536). In Evangelium Lucae Paraphrasis. Basel: Froben, 1523 [but 1524].
8° (167 x 120mm). Woodcut historiated initial and headpiece. (Occasional light spotting.) Contemporary blind-tooled leather-backed wooden boards, brass catches and clasps; housed in a modern clamshell case (lacking one strap and clasp, spine head chipped, endpapers lightly wormed). Provenance: Philipp Bartmann (author and preacher in Sierndorf and Geroldshaven; title signature dated 1563; marginalia, perhaps in his hand) – Friedrich Augustus, Prince of Brunswick-Oels (1740-1805; bookplate with cancelled shelf marks) – Georg, King of Saxony (1832-1904; title stamp) – Saxon State and University Library Dresden (deaccession stamp).
KING GEORG OF SAXONY’S COPY, and with interesting early provenance: Philipp Bartmann, also Barbatus, wrote on Luther; the extensive near-contemporary marginalia, perhaps in his hand, suggest a close reading. The third edition, published shortly after 1 September 1523. Bezzel 1166.
