FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH, second state, with the Umlaut in Märchen on the title of volume I. German Popular Stories is the first illustrated children's book in the modern sense. "By urging that 'works of fancy and fiction' have an important place in children's reading, [Edgar Taylor, the translator] may be seen as making the first moves in a campaign that was to lead to the final freeing of constraints upon the writers and publishers of books for children" (Alderson & Oyens, p.304). Morgan Library 197; Cohn 369.
