ST PETERSBURG – PUSHKAREV, Ivan Il'ich (1808-1848). Opisanie Sanktpeterburga i uezdnykh gorodov S. Peterburgskoi gubernii. [A Description of St Petersburg and towns in the St Petersburg Region.] St Petersburg: for Ivan Pushkarev, 1839-1842.
Four parts in two volumes, 8° (206 x 137mm). With the supplements and errata. Additional engraved title in volume 1, folding engraved map. (Lacking leaves 16.4-5 in volume 2; the map detached but present and with some creasing and spotting; scattered spotting; occasional marginal soiling, light marginalia in the gazetteer.) Contemporary Russian half calf, flat spines gilt in compartments, black morocco labels and numbering pieces, sprinkled edges (spines neatly repaired, volume 1 neatly recased, corners rubbed). Provenance: Il’in (engraved bookplate) – early 20th-century Russian bookseller’s ticket, priced 100 rubles.
FIRST EDITION, WITH THE MAP, of this richly detailed description of the Imperial capital, including its museums and galleries. The second volume is particularly evocative of Pushkin’s city. Pushkarev’s is the most important description of the capital published after Bogdanov (1779). RARE: WorldCat locates just one copy, at the University of Chicago; ABPC and RBH record no copy sold at auction.
