HOBHOUSE, John Cam (1786-1869). A Journey through Albania and other Provinces of Turkey ... 1809 and 1810. London: James Cawthorne , 1813. 3 volumes, 4° (283 x 224mm). Engraved frontispiece, 2 folding maps, one plan and 17 coloured aquatint plates, 7 folding, 2 plates of facsimiles and one double-page plate of Greek music. (Tears and repairs to frontispiece, title, map of Albania, plate of the Albanian in vol. I, and a few other leaves, marginal spotting.) Contemporary drab boards, uncut (skilfully rebacked with new labels, rubbed, a few light stains). Provenance: S. Soley (signature on pastedown) -- Oliver Nowell Chadwyck-Healey (bookplate).
FIRST EDITION, unusually bound in three rather than two volumes. 'Hobhouse was a close friend of Byron and accompanied him on his first journey to Greece. This work is of great interest not only for the light it sheds on that journey, but for the mass of information Hobhouse provides, in particular on the court and character of Ali Pasha’: Atabey 584; Blackmer 821.
