The Dutch landscape painter Remigius Adrianus Haanen was taught by his father Casparus Haanen (1778-1849) and studied amongst others in Amsterdam, Frankfurt am Main and Vienna where he changed his name to Remy van Haanen and became known for paintings of Austrian landscapes. He travelled to Russia (Saint Petersburg) from circa 1850-1856 to study and where he was appreciated for his winterscenes. During the exhibition More than Romanticism: Russian and Dutch painting in the first half of the 19th century in 2014 it has been suggested that Haanen made the present lot while he was in Russia.
