Lot Essay

David Emile Joseph de Noter was one of the leading Belgian academic painters known for his paintings depicting rich kitchen interiors. His attention to detail and his masterful control of the metier give his work a realistic nature. His bountiful still lifes consisted of colourful flowers, a great variety of vegetables, game and fish in a 17th century setting. Sometimes he collaborated with other artists as Henri Leys (1815-1869) and Alfred Stevens (1823-1906). The present lot has been established with the help of the Austrian painter Guillaume Koller, who was mainly known for his historical scenes with full-length characters.
