The pattern for this distinctive chest of drawers is first recorded in Gillows' Estimate Sketch Books in 1821. The signature on the present lot is almost certainly that of the cabinet-maker Joseph Barrow who was employed at Gillows Lancaster in the early/mid-19th century (Susan Stuart, Gillows of Lancaster and London 1730-1840, London, 2008, vol. II, p.215.)
