Following a successful career as a writer and a foreign policy adviser in Washington D.C., Joyce Lasky Reed founded the Fabergé Arts Foundation, a nonprofit organisation formed to preserve Russian cultural heritage, particularly tied to the work of Peter Karl Fabergé (1846-1942). She helped coordinate important Fabergé exhibitions in Washington, St Petersburg, London and Paris, and was a co-editor (with S. Swezey) of Fabergé Flowers, New York, 2004.
In the 1960s Lasky Reed lived in Moscow with her first husband Anatole Shub (1928-2006), who was based there as a foreign correspondent. During this time the couple had met with and supported various unofficial artists, such as Lidia Masterkova. The present work is a rare and exceptional example of the artist's work from the most sought-after period of her career.
