A SILVER BOTTLE COOLER FROM THE GRAND DUCHESS ALEXANDRA NIKOLAEVNA SERVICE MARK OF CARL TEGELSTEN, ST PETERSBURG, 1843 Tapering cylindrical, on foliate veloutés, with acanthus scroll handles and scrolling foliate border, one side engraved with the Imperial double-headed eagle, the other engraved with the monogram of Grand Duchess Alexandra Nikolaevna beneath the Imperial crown, with removable liner, marked throughout, the base inscribed 'No. 11.' and further engraved with scratch weight '11[funt] 41¾ [zolotnik], the liner inscribed 'No. 2' 10½ in. (26.7 cm.) 151.65 oz. (4716.8 gr.)

Lot Essay

Grand Duchess Alexandra Nikolaevna (1825-1844) was the third daughter of Emperor Nicholas I (1796-1855) and Empress Alexandra Feodorovna (1798-1860), née Charlotte of Prussia. She married Prince Frederick William of Hesse (1820-1864) in 1844 and died in childbirth later that same year.

Emperor Nicholas I supplied his three daughters with lavish dowries, which included extensive silver services. Many of the silver services were produced by Carl Tegelsten (1798-1852), a master of Finnish descent. He received the commissions through the fashionable English Shop, owned by the English merchants, Konstantin Nicholls and Wilhelm Plincke, which according to the court chamberlain Dolgoruky "enjoyed universal trust" (A. Odom, Russian Silver in America: Surviving the Melting Pot, London, 2011, p. 145).

A nearly identical wine cooler from the Grand Duchess Olga Nikolaevna Service was sold at Christie's, New York on 21 October 2003, lot 23.
