Rottingdean near Brighton in Sussex was William Nicholson’s home from 1909 to 1914. This a favourite view looking along Whiteways Lane, the old smugglers’ route from Saltdean Gap, towards the village - with the windmill on the horizon. The paths cut in the chalk downs and the light reflecting off the knapped flint boundary walls create patterns in the landscape.

We are very grateful to Patricia Reed for preparing this catalogue entry.
