A VERY RARE JIZHOU BLACK-GLAZED TEA BOWL
SOUTHERN SONG DYNASTY (1127-1279)
The bowl is thickly potted with deep sides rising from a low, narrow foot to the rim mounted with gilt-metal, covered with a thick even glaze of a deep dark-brown tone. The base is unglazed revealing the buff body.

Lot Essay

Jizhou black-glazed tea bowls are extremely rare. Compare to two Jizhou bowls of similar form but decorated with ‘paper-cut’ technique from the collection of Palace Museum, Beijing, illustrated in Porcelain of the Song Dynasty (II), The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum, Hong Kong, 1996, nos. 218 and 220.
