The sitter was the third son of Holy Roman Emperor Leopold II and Infanta Maria Luisa of Spain. In 1815, he married Princess Henrietta of Nassau-Weilburg, with whom he had seven children. He is remembered for his commandment and reformation of the Austrian army during the Napoleonic Wars.
The present miniature was painted in 1801, the year that the sitter was elected Hoch- und Deutschmeister of the Order of Teutonic Knights. In 1804, he was succeeded by his brother Archduke Anton Victor of Austria.
