A very worn paper label on the reverse of the frame is inscribed 'Sir [...] Ross RA / [...] Andrew Robertson whilst his pupil / Chas [...]'

Sir William Charles Ross studied at the Royal Academy schools before becoming an assistant to Andrew Robertson. There is a portrait of the sitter in older age by Hugh Ross, the sitter's brother, in the National Portrait Gallery, London (inv. no. NPG1946)
