These wines came from an old quinta house near the center of Funchal. During my first meeting with the owner at this colonial styled quinta house I recalled how Michael Broadbent must have felt discovering forgotten, great pre phylloxera Bordeaux wines in the old cellars of Scottish castles. The sheer variety of old Madeiras in this collection was a great surprise to me, most I never have seen before.

In the 19th and early 20th century a large number of families were still producing their own Madeira wines. Like the ancestors of the current owner of the quinta. Often these wines were traded with shippers and some left to be sold or consumed at the family house. It is not uncommon to find great old bottles of Madeira wine on the island without the name of the producer. The family stocks are some of the most interesting discoveries as they were often aged in cask for a long time and after bottling never left the house.

Here in the back behind the quinta house there still was the lodge where the wine was produced and the loft where all the casks were left to age in the classic canteiro system. The atmosphere of walking around in this empty lodge where the wines had been stored allowed one to step back in time.

All wines were tasted and recorked by Francisco Albuquerque in May 2007. The wines were stored at the quinta standing upright.

This collection was packed by Christie’s staff and shipped to our New York warehouse especially for this sale. EV
