In Monologue (Lot 232), Yeh Tzu Chi depicts a pure white Camellia in realistic mannerism, each plump and moist petal reflects a subdued glow. The background is divided into two parts-a wooden table in warm maroon hues constructs the lower part, and shades of dark blue fills the upper part of the canvas with an eerie tune. Classical aura of this Minimalist composition is reminiscent of 18th century French painter Jean- Baptiste-Siméon Chardin's still life paintings, with the visual enchantment of its own theatricality. Yeh Tzu Chi places the ephemeral flower on a permanent stage, extracting the symbol of pure beauty from natural images.
