Lot Essay

Most of the works on this theme [Dancers] display a delicate modulation of semi-repetitive lines and surfaces of colour. Atmosphere is evoked by the way the colours float up and down the canvas, vertically and horizontally, in modulated harmony or through contrast. The standing position of the dancers creates a vertical accentuation, while elements of their costumes, their faces, and their hair create a horizontal undulation in the same colours. Visual counterpoints at once initiate and complete the rhythmic movement. The impression is that of a dance of colour rather than a dance of gesture.”
