Lot Essay

Having lost his sight in one eye in an accident Munnings was unable to join the army at the outbreak of World War I. In 1917 he was assigned official war artist to the Canadian Cavalry Brigade in France, under the command of Major-General, the Rt Hon. J.E.B. Seely (later Lord Mottistone). He was such a success that in April 1918 he joined the Canadian Forestry Corps in Normandy to document the efforts of the British and French troops.
