As related by Ovid in Metamorphoses, chapter 14:  In a last ditch effort to attract the attentions of the nymph Pomona, Vertumnus, a nature god who could assume any shape, changed himself into an old woman.  Having failed in this guise, he revealed himself to her in his true form – the moment captured in the present biscuit group.   Initially stunned, Pomona eventually succumbed to his seduction.
