Small 2°, (346 x 205 mm). Title, 55 pp of text, entirely lithographed. Illustrated with 24 lithographic folding plates mounted on extensions (Some creasing and spotting, final blank repair.) Contemporary boards (spine and corners renewed in calf); cloth folding case.

FIRST EDITION of the first book produced at the lithographic press established at West Point. The book contains instructions for the cadets on the manufacture of gunpowder, canon cartridges, shot, fuses, bombs, grenades, torches, signal rockets, etc. accompanied by plates, with the entire book in lithography. An early example of American lithography. The press was established under Captain D.H. Mahan, an important figure in the history of military education. RARE: according to American Book Prices Current no other copy sold at auction in the last 30 years. Sabin 48975 (1839 edition).
