WASHINGTON'S FIRST PUBLIC NOTICE

THIS NEWSPAPER CONTAINS THE FIRST FORMAL PUBLIC MENTION OF WASHINGTON IN A SPEECH BY LT. GOVERNOR DINWIDDIE before the House of Burgesses. Major Washington had been sent to investigate the activities of the French around Fort Erie. His discoveries would shortly lead to the informal beginnings of the French and Indian war. Dinwiddie had alerted the other royal governors by correspondence of Washington’s expedition. But it was left to the speech to publically proclaim the dangers the French presented. Upon Washington’s return, he would soon publish a journal of his adventures just after Dinwiddie’s address. He was almost immediately sent into the field to inaugurate his distinguished military career and establish his standing as one of world history’s outstanding personalities. Although Dinwiddie’s speech is well-known among historians, it is almost impossible to find outside the Virginia archives. This may be the only time it was reproduced in a newspaper, and on the front page in mint condition.
