Two half-titles, title printed in red and black, 2pp. dedication to George I, 4pp. “Preface,” 2pp. “Declaration sur cet ouvrage,” 2pp. “Avertissement de l'Editeur,” 4pp. “Table Alphabetique,” 100 hand-colored engraved plates (one folding) after Samuel Fallours and others, each showing two or more subjects. (Half-titles and text leaves spotted, folding plate with short splits and some creasing.) Modern buckram. Provenance: Melchior Kade & Compagnie, Danzig (invoice dated 12 March, 1755 pasted to front paste-down); Jacob Theodor Klein (1685-1759) secretary of the city of Danzig and founder of the Danzig botanical garden, author of several works on botany and zoological nomenclature (“Herr Secretaire Klein” recipient of the invoice, and father in law of:); Daniel Gralath (1708-1767) a physicist and a mayor of Danzig (“Ex Bibliotheca Gralathiana” armorial bookplate); Charles William Beebe (1877-1962) American naturalist, explorer and author (bookplate).
Second edition. A BEAUTIFULLY ILLUSTRATED WORK ON FISH AND CRABS OF THE EAST INDIES. The edition was limited to about 100 copies. The very rare first edition was published by Renard himself in 1719. For the second edition “it seems that the publishing firm of Ottens took the thirty (or thirty-six) unbound copies purchased from Renard's estate, had the plates colored, replaced Renard's old undated title page and added a ‘Préface’ provided by Aerout Vosmaer and the ‘Déclaration sur cet ouvrage’ of Renard. These then, together with some seventy additional copies newly printed from the original coppers... constitute the second edition.” (Pietsch I, pp.23-24). Fallours (fl. 1703-1720) is acknowledged as the artist of the illustrations in the second volume, but is also responsible for some of the illustrations in the first volume. At the time of publication the illustrations in the work were viewed as fable and fantasy products. Although some of the illustrations are exaggerated, all of them seem to be based on nature.
